Dirty Lazy Keto Diet – Does It Really Work?


You have probably heard of the ketogenic diet or keto diet, but have you ever come across the dirty Lazy keto diet?

The dirty lazy keto diet is a less restrictive version of the traditional high fat, low-carb diet. The latter requires you to monitor the amounts of macronutrients you are consuming to push your body into a metabolic state known as ketosis – This is where your liver starts using fatty acids to produce energy instead of glucose.

To achieve this goal, dieters may restrict their lazy keto meals carb intake to around 1–5% of their total daily calories. On the other hand, the dirty lazy keto diet focuses on carb restriction, but with a very loose margin. Differently put, you are not required to track your macros or worry about consuming more than 5% of fats.

  • Suppressing appetite – The dirty lazy keto diet stimulates the secretion of the hunger-suppressing hormone known as leptin, decreasing your total caloric intake.
  • Enhancing insulin sensitivity – By lowering carbohydrate intake, your pancreas would need to release insulin less often. As a result, insulin sensitivity improves, which promotes weight loss and reduces the risk of type II diabetes.
  • Augmenting the rate of lipolysis (i.e., fat burning) – Because your diet is lacking sugar, the body has to burn fat to produce energy.

The dirty lazy keto diet addresses the risk factors of heart disease in order to improve clinical outcomes.

The primary risk factors targeted by the dirty lazy keto diet include:

Unlike other organs, when brain cells die, the process is irreversible. In other words, once a part of the brain gets damaged, there is no going back.

Some of you might read somewhere that researchers discovered new regenerative abilities of the brain; however, the effect of this process is too insignificant, making it clinically irrelevant.

The primary pathogenesis that destroys brain cells is known as oxidative stress, where the number of reactive oxygen species (i.e., free radicals) exceeds that of antioxidants.

1.      Reaching ketosis may be difficult

While the less restrictive nature of the dirty lazy keto is appealing to many people, it may slow down the transition to ketosis.

In fact, you may not even reach ketosis if your carb intake is higher than it should be.

Note that ketosis requires carb restriction and a relatively low intake of protein since your liver can use the latter to produce glucose in a process known as gluconeogenesis.

2.      Fear of nutritional deficiency

Despite the less restrictive nature of the dirty lazy keto diet, it still requires cutting out some major food elements from your menu.

Over time, this could prove difficult to obtain the necessary vitamins, minerals, and fiber, especially when you don’t pay attention to the macros and micros you consume.

3.      Lack of research behind long-term effects

There are currently no studies that inspect the long-term effects of the ketogenic diet or its variations. What this means is that we do not have any scientific proof that supports the benefits of the keto diet in the long run.

Some even argue that low-carb, high-fat diets produce similar benefits compared to balanced weight-loss diets after 1–2 years.

With that said, if you want to get the health benefits of the dirty lazy keto diet while minimizing your risk of disease, make sure to opt for healthy fats.
